Chile has surpassed two million cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began, with an additional 14,291 new infections confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 2,001,346, according to the country’s health ministry.
In the standard epidemiological bulletin of the day, the Chilean Ministry of Health states that eight other patients have died due to complications of Covid-19. As a result, the total death toll in the country now stands at 39,543.
The active cases are estimated at 67,018, a number that shows an upward trend during the tourist season in the southern hemisphere and the spread of the virus due to the highly contagious Homicron variant. However, new hospital admissions have stabilized, despite an increase in infections.
The test-positive index, which rose 314% over two weeks, reached 15.82% nationwide and 13.59% in the Santiago metropolitan area over the past 24 hours.
The regions of Chile where the highest positive rates were recorded last week were Tarapaca, Magagianes, Antofagasta and Arika and Parinacota.
