The city of Hamburg set a new world record today for the largest gathering of people dressed as Harry Potter, complete with a long black cape, the obligatory round glasses and a mark on the forehead.

Exactly 1,758 people with the appearance of the famous wizard imagined by British author Joan Rowling gathered in the town hall square of this northern German city, according to the organizers of the competition.

The Australian city of Perth held the previous record from 2017, with 997 participants in the competition.

Among those present were a large number of children and teenagers.

Harry Potter “has always fascinated me, this whole wizarding world,” said 16-year-old Isabelle Zichting, who didn’t want to miss the event.

The invitation to the “Harry Potter” gathering came as part of a day celebrating the publication of the first German-language volume of the successful literary series by Hamburg’s Carlsen Verlag 25 years ago.
