A child was killed and four other civilians were wounded in a shell attack near a market in the central Mali city of Timbuktu.

Two projectiles fired by “terrorists” hit central Timbuktu on Saturday, a local official told AFP, adding that an 11-year-old girl was killed and a 4-year-old boy was among the wounded.

“At around 17:30 on Saturday, terrorist groups launched an attack on the city of Timbuktu, where a shell landed near the market,” the military confirmed. Four citizens were transported to a hospital, according to a related announcement.

Hospital sources confirmed to AFP the death of a little girl.

On Monday, local officials told AFP that Islamists had besieged the city of Timbuktu. In a recent online posting attributed to the so-called “Islam and Muslim Support Group,” which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, jihadists claimed to have declared war on the greater Timbuktu region.

The military regime’s unexpected demand in June for the UN peacekeeping force operating in the country (MINUSMA) to leave has raised concerns that Mali could slide further into chaos. The UN mission has already withdrawn from two bases near Timbuktu (Ber and Gudam) and has been called to complete its withdrawal from the country by the end of the year.
