Two explosions at a liquefied gas filling station killed one person and injured 57 others on Saturday in Romanianear Bucharest.

Thirty-nine firefighters who had rushed to the station in the city Creventianorth of Bucharest, after the first explosion occurred they were injured when there was a second one.

Among the wounded are four police officers, the Romanian Deputy Minister of the Interior explained Raed Arafatwho added that some of the injured have serious burns.

“We have flown two firefighters and two civilians abroad (to receive treatment) and more will follow,” he said in a statement.

The wounded were transported to Italy and Belgium, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known, while an investigation is underway.

“We know that the gas station was not operating, it was not licensed,” Arafat noted.

After the first explosion the fire spread to two fuel tanks and a nearby house.

More of 20 fire engines they rushed to the scene, while residents were evacuated within a radius of 700 meters and traffic was suspended on a nearby main road, as announced by the Emergency Situations Service.

The fire was brought under control this morning.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis spoke of a “tragedy” in a Facebook post.
