Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said it may be possible to negotiate a solution for Crimeawhich was annexed by the Russian Federation in 2014, as its forces gain ground on their gradual march south towards the Black Sea.

Referring to the administrative borders of Crimea, Zelensky stressed: “I think it is politically possible to push for the demilitarization of Russia on this peninsular territory“, he said in an interview posted on YouTube and republished by Ukrainian media this morning.

Kiev is facing an all-out invasion from Russia and has repeatedly stated that his goal is to take Crimea back as well as areas occupied since the war began in February 2022.

Ukrainian troops in the south of the country are gradually pushing towards the Black Sea coast in an attempt to cut off a supply route for Russian forces on the peninsula.

In the interview Zelensky stated that a political solution for Crimea would be preferable because it would have fewer casualties.

He stated that he did not want to shift the war to Russian soil. The goal is to liberate our territories in Ukraine, he stressed, noting that advancing on Russian soil could jeopardize critical Western support and that would mean losses for Kiev.
