A very strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck deep in the sea north of Bali and Indonesia’s Lombok islands in the early hours of the morning, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), prompting people to rush out of buildings.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 203 kilometers north of Mataram and the focal depth was large, 516 kilometers below the earth’s surface, according to EMSC data.
The Indonesian Seismological Service and the US Geological Survey assessed for their part that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and ruled out the possibility of causing a tsunami.
The earthquake was felt shortly before 04:00 [σ.σ. τοπική ώρα· χθες Δευτέρα στις 23:00 ώρα Ελλάδας] in coastal areas in Bali and Lombok. It was followed by two strong aftershocks, measuring 6.1 and 6.5 respectively, according to the Indonesian Seismological Service.
Several came out of buildings.
However, there are no reports of casualties or damage so far, according to Indonesia’s disaster management agency BNPB.
As the earthquake struck at a great depth “it is not expected to be catastrophic,” explained BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari.
