With 100 mph winds, Hurricane Idalia pounds Florida. Idalia made landfall near the town of Keaton Beach in Florida’s Big Bend region at about 07:45 local time (12:45 BST).

A “destructive storm surge” is sweeping Florida’s Big Bend coast, with “damaging winds moving inland,” the National Hurricane Center said.

More than 240,000 people are without power in Florida, according to PowerOutage.US statistics while Almost 4,500 people they are staying in Red Cross shelters in the areas affected by the typhoon.

In Hernando County, the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (WREC) “shut off power to several areas of the county as an emergency protective measure to protect itself,” a county tweet said.

“WREC shut down the power to the entire Pine Island, Bayport, Hernando Beach, Weeki Wachee and Aripeka as a result of the storm,” the county said. “It will remain closed until further notice,” county officials said.

Hernando County currently has more than 2,000 customers without power as of 9:38 am. ET according to PowerOutage.US and is located a few miles north of the Tampa metro area.
