A Ukrainian court ordered the powerful businessman to be detained for two months Ihor Kolomoiskyaccused of fraud and money laundering, but allowing him to post bail of more than 509 million hryvnias, equivalent to around 13 million euros.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, in an indirect reference to Kolomoisky’s prosecution, he thanked law enforcement agencies for their actions in bringing time-consuming cases to justice.

“I thank law enforcement officials for their determination to fairly resolve each of the decades-long cases.” Zelensky said in his evening videotaped speech.

The president of Ukraine has made the fight against corruption a priority. Although he became widely known to the public when he played the president in a TV series broadcast by a channel owned by Kolomoisky, he denies having any personal relations with the businessman.

Kolomoisky is the former owner of the large Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalized at the end of 2016 as part of the reorganization of the country’s banking system.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky’s residence in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country’s two largest oil companies partly owned by the businessman.

The United States imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 “due to his involvement in a major corruption case.” US authorities also allege that Kolomoisky and an associate laundered embezzled funds through the United States. Kolomoisky denies the charges.
