Some 280,000 citizens have so far registered for professional service in the Russian armed forces through 2023, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and former President Dmitry Medvedev said today.

While visiting the Russian Far East, he said he met with local officials to cooperate in efforts to strengthen the country’s armed forces.

“According to the Ministry of Defense, as of January 1, 2023, about 280,000 civilians have been accepted into the ranks of the armed forces on the basis of signing contracts,” including reservists, Russian news agency TASS reported, citing Medvedev.

Last year, Russia announced a plan to increase the number of combat personnel in its armed forces by more than 30 percent to 1.5 million members.

It is an ambitious plan, made even more difficult to implement by the heavy but unreported Russian losses in Moscow’s war against Ukraine.
