Chios puts a “bow” to be added to its list of 195 global geoparks Unesco. Based on its rich geological heritage and its special geomorphology, it declares itself “present” in the effort to function as a geopark in its entirety.

In her “arsenal” for achieving the goal, the professor tells APE-MPE Nikos Zouros, president of the Hellenic Geoparks Committee of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO and president of the Global Network of Geoparks “the internationally important fossil-bearing sites, such as in the area of Korakari with the fossils of ammonites, rocks and folded structures in northern Chios, which are several million years old years, the important caves and other volcanic products. But also other important elements that highlight the relationship between rocks and biodiversity, the cultural heritage of Kampos and the Mastic villages of Chios, and of course the cultivation of mastic, which has been included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage”.

And concludes Mr. Zouros: “This geological history of the area has left strong imprints on the character of the natural environment of the island and on the cultural journey of man in this area. Elements that contribute to the declaration of a place as a UNESCO global geopark”.
