Two workers have been arrested in China for using an excavator to dig a hole in the Great Wall, according to China Daily.

Police in Shaanxi Province (northeast China) found the massive damage after receiving a report on August 24. They then tracked down the machine the two suspects used to dig the hole and located the two workers in neighboring Horinger County, where they were arrested.

UNESCO has included the Great Wall since 1987 in the world heritage of humanity.

During their questioning, the two suspects admitted that they opened the hole “because they wanted to shorten their routes”.

State television reported that the two suspects caused “irreparable damage” to the wall, a remnant of fortifications built by Chinese emperors to deter foreign invaders.
