The U.S. Coast Guard says it has located four more bodies off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic, passengers of a boat that capsized over the weekend. Search and rescue operations will stop after sunset today, unless new information emerges.
With the four bodies found in the last 24 hours, the total number of bodies recovered from the wreck is 5 of the 39 missing people, Coast Guard chief Joe Ann Berdian told a news conference in Miami.
“If we do not find additional, specific information that will help us redirect our research, we will suspend the research business,” he added.
Rescuers have been searching for survivors since a boat capsized amid bad weather Sunday morning after leaving the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas, about 80 miles east of Miami, on Saturday night.
Rescuers earlier retrieved the body of a man, as it became known yesterday by the coast guard.
The only survivor was identified Tuesday morning by the crew of a private yacht. The survivor told authorities he was among a group of 40 people who boarded the boat and none of them were wearing life jackets, according to the coast guard.
