Government will finance 6,500 conventional ICU beds and renew 14,000 for Covid

by

The Ministry of Health confirmed this Thursday (27) that it will finance, as of March, another 6,500 regular ICU beds for the SUS. With this decision, about 30,000 beds of this type will receive funding from the federal government.

Saúde will also increase the daily rate for the operation of these units.

Because of the advancement of the ômicron variant, the folder will still maintain the daily payment for the operation of 14 thousand specific ICU beds for Covid until the end of February. It also opened a window for states and municipalities to ask, if necessary, to pay more treatment beds for the new coronavirus.

These announcements were made during a meeting between state councils (Conass), municipalities (Conasems) and the Ministry of Health, with the signing of three ordinances.

These new conventional ICU beds had been created for the care of Covid patients at the height of the pandemic. Without federal funding, many would be closed.

In December, SUS managers announced an agreement to incorporate these units into the conventional SUS network. They also defined the readjustment of the daily rates paid by the ministry for the cost of beds.

The daily cost changes according to the complexity of the care provided in each bed. In “type II” units, for patients with a high level of care, for example, it will go from R$ 478.72 to R$ 600 in the first half of 2022. In the second half it will be R$ 650.

During the meeting of SUS managers, Minister Marcelo Queiroga said he hoped that the “pandemic character” of Covid-19 would end in 2022.

“Omicron should not be despised. But we are much better prepared to give the answer”, said the minister, who defended the advance of the vaccination campaign.

The vice president of Conass and secretary of Amapá, Juan Mendes Silva, said that the advance of the variant “represents an important impact” and called for attention to the funding of pediatric beds. He declared that 28% of those hospitalized for Covid in Amapá are under 12 years old.
