An Irish man was arrested by police in Brussels after he caused significant damage last Sunday to a sculpture outside the city’s old Stock Exchange building that had just been given €17,500 to restore.

According to the Daily Mail, the particular work of art called “The Hand with the Torch” is one of two sculptures that line the entrance of the building which reopened just a day before the incident after a three-year restoration project of 90 million euros. These works included the restoration of the statue in question, which cost 17,500 euros.

The video shows the man, who appears to be intoxicated, climbing the statue which depicts a lion and next to him a man with a torch. As he tries to descend, the tourist grabs at one point to steady himself, causing the torch and part of the male figure’s hand to detach.

As the British newspaper reports, the police found the man a little later in a nearby fast food restaurant and arrested him.

Belgian media reports that compensation of several thousand euros will be requested from the arrested person.

According to the manager of the renovation works in the building, the new restoration of the historical sculpture is expected to cost quite a lot of money.
