With the great concert of the leading Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos, the proceeds of which, as has already been announced, will be allocated by the Municipality of Athens to the people affected by the catastrophic floods in Thessaly, opens tomorrow evening – after a full 15 years – the Municipal Lycabettus Theatre.

The Municipality of Athens, having managed to complete a complex technical project, delivers to residents and visitors a modern and upgraded cultural space of European standards, in the “heart” of the capital. Fully renovated and safe and with a rich musical program covering a “fan” of musical genres, the historic City Theater is reviving after so many years of silence, ushering in a new era.

Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis refers to the importance of the restoration and rendering of the city’s landmarks to Athenians and Athenians, in the video filmed inside the emblematic space of the theater.

As part of the demanding work carried out to re-open the Theatre, more than 200,000 kilograms of new metalwork replaced the time-worn sections, renovating the iconic transparent framework of the hollow, with the columns reinforced internally to preserve the integrity of the authentic, original appearance of the listed monument-theatre, as designed in 1965 by the pioneering architect, Takis Zenetos.

The 3,850 plastic seats were removed and replaced with 3,950 wooden benches, ready to welcome the spectators – not only those who will return to its legendary stands, but also the new generation who will visit the theater for the first time.

The Theater will be able to host events with 6,000 spectators (seated and standing). All interventions in the monument were carried out in accordance with the restoration study approved by the Central Council of New Monuments and accordingly based on the approved building permit.

Following the infrastructure of modern European metropolitan theatres, the necessary electro-mechanical works include a new fire network and fire detection system, a new fiber optic network to control all points from central units, as well as new wiring for lighting, sound, data and systems security based on modern requirements.

This year’s program, which begins with the emblematic concert of Stavros Xarhakos, continues with special musical evenings until mid-October.

In Lycabettus without a car

The Municipality of Athens is progressing in parallel with the overall protection and regeneration project of the hill of Lycabettus. In this context and with respect to the area and its residents, the approach by car to the Theater parking lot on the days and times of the events will only be allowed for people with disabilities, people over 60 years old, as well as for boarding/disembarking taxis.

Let the new era of the Lycabettus Theater begin with a beautiful walk in the greenery of our beloved hill.
