A week after the deadly earthquake that claimed the lives of thousands of people, Morocco announced that “today or tomorrow” it will ask for help from the international community to support the survivors

To date, the country has received aid only from Spain, Qatar, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates – countries friendly to the government, with the excuse that “based on the evidence available there is no need for additional aid”.

However, today the head of the UN’s emergency services, Martin Griffiths, announced that we expect and hope – based on discussions with the Moroccan authorities – that the request for help will be sent today or tomorrow… I mean… a lot soon”.

At the same time, the World Bank is working with authorities in Morocco and Libya to provide financing in response to the deadly disasters that hit the two countries, the bank’s director for Turkey, Umberto Lopez, told Reuters today.

“The bank is working with the authorities on how to respond to the earthquake. But how you respond also depends on the requests of the authorities,” Lopez said in an interview in Ankara.

“And I don’t know where the talks with Morocco and Libya are at the moment. I know the teams are working,” he added.
