Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are in Lampedusa. At this time they are visiting the port and the closed center for refugees and immigrants on the island.

In a brief conversation with a group of residents near the airport, the Italian Prime Minister assured that every possible effort is being made to decongest the island from the large number of immigrants and refugees who have arrived in the last five days.

At the same time, the assurance was given that no camp will be set up on the island, neither for the immigrants, nor for the carabinieri and the police.

“As always, I speak and take responsibility in the first person,” Georgia Meloni said.

The president of the European Commission, in her post on X, says: “It is very important for me to be in Lampedusa today. I am here to offer a coordinated response from the Italian and European authorities, presenting together with the Italian Prime Minister a 10-point action plan.”
