King Charles and his wife Camilla have been making an official three-day visit to France since yesterday.

After yesterday’s “royal” dinner in Versailles, Charles today gave a historic speech to the French National Assembly, as he is the first British monarch to rise to the podium of the French Parliament.

Charles has visited France more than 30 times when he was Prince of Wales but first today as Britain’s monarch

Speaking in fluent French, he promised to “do everything in his power to strengthen the meaningful relationship between the UK and France”.

“The United Kingdom will always be one of France’s closest allies” and “together, our potential is limitless,” Charles said, speaking in French.
He also reiterated the UK and France’s “unwavering determination” to see Ukraine “triumph”.

The British monarch also underlined the support of Paris and London to Kiev against the “unjustified attack on our continent” that Ukraine is receiving from Russia.

The MPs stood and applauded Charles III for more than a minute and a half after his speech.

“Applause that would make us dream,” commented the president of the French Senate, Gérard Larchet.
