Turkish police have brought in ten people believed to be linked to the Islamic State group and arrested five of them, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced.
According to the minister, the MIT intelligence agency, the police and the counter-terrorism agency organized an operation in Izmir, following information that the suspects had hidden incendiary devices in the city and were planning a bomb attack in the Bornova district.
Authorities discovered explosives, weapons and ammunition hidden in a mountainous area. Of the ten suspects, five have been arrested and the rest are under “judicial control,” Yerlikaya said in a post on the X platform. This means they may be released on parole.
In the footage from the operation posted by the minister on the internet, several patrol cars can be seen in a mountainous area, while police officers investigate a small cave where the materials were hidden. A house was also searched. Reuters was unable to verify the video.
Islamic State has launched several attacks in Turkey, including one on an Istanbul nightclub on New Year’s Day 2017 that killed 39 people.
