Norwegian police have arrested a former Wagner executive who tried to cross the border illegally back into Russia after seeking asylum in Norway earlier this year
Norwegian police arrested a former Wagner commander, who tried to cross the border illegally back into Russia after seeking asylum in Norway earlier this year, according to Reuters.
Andrei Medvedev, who escaped from Russia in January via the Arctic border with Norway, he had reported that in his attempt to escape he was shot by the Russian guards. He has spoken about the time he was fighting in Ukraine as a member of Team Wagner.
Police said in a statement late Friday that a man in his 20s was arrested for attempting to illegally cross the Russian border, but did not name him. An officer from Finnmark’s local police declined to identify the arrested person.
Crossing the border into Russia is only allowed at designated points.
But Medvedev’s arrest was due to a misunderstanding, his Norwegian lawyer Brindjulf Risnes told Reuters.
Upon his arrival in Norway, Medvedev said he sought asylum because he feared for his life after witnessing the killing and ill-treatment of Russian prisoners being brought to the front lines in Ukraine.
