North Korea: New missile launch into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula

by

North Korea on Saturday launched at least one alleged ballistic missile into the sea off the east coast of the country, the governments of Japan and South Korea said.

This is Pyongyang’s seventh missile test since the beginning of the year.

Tokyo said North Korea had fired a “possible ballistic missile”, while South Korea’s General Staff said it had fired an unidentified missile without giving further details.

With this latest test, if confirmed, Pyongyang will have carried out the largest number of tests on its missile program in January, which analysts say is expanding and developing new capabilities despite tighter sanctions and UN Security Council resolutions. banning ballistic missile tests in the country.

In a New Year’s Eve speech, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for a state-of-the-art military boost at a time when talks between Pyongyang, Seoul and Washington have been frozen.

Since then, North Korea has carried out a series of launches featuring a dizzying array of types of weapons, launch sites and an increasingly advanced level.

From supersonic missiles and long-range cruise missiles to rocket launchers from airports and airports, the tests highlight the rapidly growing and strengthened arsenal of the nuclear-armed isolated state amid stagnant conversations about stagnation.

North Korea has not tested intercontinental ballistic missiles or its longer-range nuclear weapons since 2017, but the country’s leaders said this month they could resume such tests.

Pyongyang’s latest launches included a test launch of two short-range ballistic missiles and their warheads on Thursday, and an upgrade to a long-range cruise missile system in a test on Tuesday.

Pyongyang has defended the launches as its sovereign right to self-defense and says they are not targeting any particular country, but has accused Washington and Seoul of “hostile policies”.

Kim visited an ammunition factory last week, where he called for a “comprehensive effort” to produce “powerful high-end weapons” and his workers chanted their commitment to “crushing … the challenges of the US imperialists and their vassals.” Who seek to violate their right to self-defense by talking about “the hardest adversity of all time”.
