The biographer of Nirvana, Michael Azerand has claimed that Kurt Cobain was “jealous” of his bandmate Dave Grohl.
The author recently appeared on the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast to talk about an expanded version of his 1993 book about the band, “Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana».
In the original book, Cobain described a guitar part written by Grohl on the song “Scentless Apprentice” from the album “In Utero” as “sleazy”.
When asked on the podcast about his specific reference the author replied: “I thought it was a bit dismissive, to be honest.”
Elsewhere in Come As You Are, Kurt Cobain is quoted as calling Dave Grohl “the most balanced boy in the whole world.”
The writer claimed the late Nirvana frontman was jealous of the drummer of the group that would go on to form the Foo Fighters.
“I think Kurt was partly making fun of Dave because he was normal,” Azerand explained. “Groll is a popular, balanced guy – he really is. And I think part of it was Kurt making fun of him because he wasn’t a freak, like Kurt. And he was jealous too. I think Kurt was a little jealous of Dave because Dave was really organized.”
In 2019, former Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg said that Cobain was well aware of Grohl’s performing talent, suggesting that there may have been “a trace of envy” between the two.
