The PKK claimed responsibility for the bombing
The Kurdish PKK organization claimed responsibility for the bombing that occurred this morning in Ankara, resulting in the death of two of the attackers and the wounding of two police officers, according to Turkish media reports.
“An act of sacrifice was committed against the Turkish interior ministry by a group linked to our Immortal Brigade,” the armed group told the Kurdish-affiliated ANF media.
Erdogan: Terrorists will not achieve their goals
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a speech to the Turkish parliament, warned the “terrorists” and the European Union, which makes Turkey “endure 40 years”, a few hours after the suicide attack, for which there is no claim of responsibility, which resulted in the injury of two police officers, in the center of the capital, Ankara.
“Turkey no longer expects anything from the European Union that makes us endure at its door for 40 years,” the head of state said at the start of the new parliamentary term.
Instead, he made no mention of Sweden’s NATO accession process, which MPs are supposed to ratify during this parliamentary term.
“We have kept all the promises we have made to the EU, but they have kept almost none of theirs,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that he would not “tolerate new demands or conditions in the accession process” of Turkey.
“If they intend to end the accession process that exists only on paper, that is their decision,” he said.
The president’s fury stems from a recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights which criticized Turkey this week for convicting a man of terrorism charges based solely on his use of the encrypted messaging app ByLock.
Erdogan was speaking hours after the suicide attack in front of the interior ministry in which the two attackers were killed.
“The criminals who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their goals and will never achieve them,” he said.
