A member of the American hard-right, Matt Gage, yesterday submitted a motion to impeach the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.

The move, very rare in American parliamentary history, follows Congress’s passage on Saturday of a temporary budget that averted a federal government shutdown, a maneuver strongly opposed by many conservatives.

The impeachment motion filed by Mr. Goetz, who is elected in Florida, will be a major test in the coming days in the House of Representatives.

“Go ahead!”, Mr McCarthy immediately reacted in an uncompromising tone via X (the former Twitter).

A political ally of Donald Trump, Mr Goetz accuses Mr McCarthy of making a “secret deal” with Democratic President Joe Biden over funding for Ukraine as part of budget negotiations.

The right wing of the Republican party opposes the disbursement of further funds to Kiev, saying that this money should be used to deal with the immigration crisis on the US-Mexico border.

That group has a de facto veto in the House on many issues, given the thin Republican majority in that chamber of Congress.

58-year-old Kevin McCarthy was elected speaker with great difficulty in January because of this very slim majority.

In order to take office he was forced to make huge concessions to about twenty Trumpists, including giving any of their members the ability to initiate impeachment proceedings.

The fratricidal conflict in Washington was widely expected: Mr McCarthy himself said on Saturday that he felt his office was at risk.

“You know if I have to risk my position to defend the American people I will,” he said.

To be adopted, the proposal must be approved by a majority in the House of Representatives.

To stay in office, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives will likely need Democratic support. In the ranks of the Commonwealth, however, absolutely nothing is taken for granted. Talks are underway within President Biden’s party to decide whether or not Mr. McCarthy deserves to be endorsed and remain in office.
