The Baltimore Police Department said it intervened to control a “situation” created by a “gunman who opened fire.”
Several people were wounded by gunfire near a University of Baltimore campus Tuesday night, police in the East Coast city said.
The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) said via X (the former Twitter) that it intervened to control a “situation” created by a “gunman who opened fire” and later said there were “multiple casualties” near the university’s campus Morgan State. He urged citizens to “take safe shelter where they are” and avoid the area.
Later, he stated that he considered the crisis to be over, without giving further details.
Morgan State is a historically predominantly African-American university. Currently, it has approximately 9,000 students.
So-called mass shootings – attacks with the use of weapons that have four or more victims, in the idiom of American law enforcement agencies – remain a scourge in the US, a country that has more guns than residents, mainly because of the ease with which which one can acquire them. One in three adults owns at least one gun, and about one in two adults lives in a household that has at least one gun.
