Upper Bavaria’s police confirmed that officers were called to intervene at an AfD rally ahead of Sunday’s election.
The leader of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) was transferred to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Tino Hroupalas, after an “incident” at a campaign rally in the southern German city of Ingolstadt.
The German News Agency (dpa) reported that Tino Hroupalas “remains tonight under medical observation”, citing the press office of the AfD party.
A witness told local newspaper Donaukurier that the 48-year-old AfD leader had taken some selfies and then collapsed before being taken to hospital. However, a local AfD representative told the dpa news agency that Hrupala was scheduled to speak at the event, but was involved in an altercation.
Upper Bavaria’s police directorate initially confirmed that officers had been called to intervene at an AfD rally ahead of Sunday’s Bavarian parliamentary elections, but did not elaborate on the incident.
Later on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Upper Bavaria police department said it remained unclear whether the politician was attacked, collapsed or just wasn’t feeling well, adding that authorities are not ruling anything out and that the investigation is ongoing.
