Ukraine announced today that it has “suspended” the proceedings it initiated at the World Trade Organization against its neighboring EU member countries, such as Poland. which adopted restrictions on its grain exports. Kiev has expressed optimism that the impasse with those countries can be resolved, although probably not before parliamentary elections to be held in Poland on October 15.

As we seek a practical solution, our dispute process at the World Trade Organization where we have appealed is currently on hold“, said Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Katska, quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

He estimated that the disagreements on the issue of Ukrainian grain exports will “to be resolved within the coming weeks and months“.

Ukraine opposes the issue of agricultural exports in three EU member countries — Poland, Slovakia and Hungary — which in September extended their embargo on Ukrainian grain imports, despite the lifting of restrictions decided by Brussels.

These countries said they want to protect their farmers against the influx of Ukrainian grain, which has caused prices to fall.

This decision had caused an increase in tensions between Kiev and its Eastern European allieslike Poland, which had protested by urgently calling the Ukrainian ambassador for an explanation, after Zelensky’s harsh statements from the UN podium.

Ukraine has been able to export its grain through the Black Sea for almost a year under an agreement with Moscow brokered by Turkey and the UN. Russia pulled out of that deal in July, citing Western sanctions as a hindrance to its own exports.

Kiev has been trying ever since to create a new Black Sea corridor for exportsdespite Russian threats.
