Hamza Yousaf broke down in tears and criticized Israel’s stance, saying “a collective punishment is not justified”
The Prime Minister of Scotland Hamza Yousaf on Friday released a video message sent to him by his mother-in-law from Gaza, in which, with tears in her eyes, the woman laments Israel’s ultimatum to civilians to move south.
“This is Elizabeth El Nakla. She is my mother-in-law (…) Like most Gazans, she has nothing to do with Hamas. She was told to leave Gaza but, like the rest of the population, she is trapped and has nowhere to go” Yusuf wrote on Platform X.
“This will be my last video” says El Nakla in its message. “One million people without food, without water and they (the Israeli army) are bombing them (…) Where should we go? (…) Where is the humanity?’ athe Scottish Prime Minister’s mother-in-law, who is a retired nurse, can be heard saying.
This is Elizabeth El-Nakla. She is my mother-in-law. A retired nurse from Dundee, Scotland. She, like the vast majority of people in Gaza, has nothing to do with Hamas. She has been told to leave Gaza but, like the rest of the population, is trapped with nowhere to go. pic.twitter.com/D3ZUtnEmyO

In an interview he gave earlier to the Sky News channel, Mr Hamza Yousaf burst into sobs when he referred to the “powerlessness and hopelessness” he and his wife, Nadia, feel in the face of this situation. He also blamed the British government for not offering him any help. He said he was “disappointed” and “angry” that Foreign Secretary James Cleverley, to whom he wrote to inform him about his relatives in Gaza, never replied. Since announcing that his in-laws are stranded in Gaza, where they had gone to visit relatives, he has also had no contact with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, he added.
In another interview with the BBC, Yusuf criticized Israel’s attitude saying that “a collective punishment is not justified” and that innocent people “will pay the price for these heinous (Hamas) attacks that they had nothing to do with.”
I also met with Palestinian leaders from different faiths today. They want peace & they want the life of a Palestinian to be equal to the life of an Israeli.
I gave them my assurance that @scotgov will continue to call for a ceasefire and a humanitarian corridor to be opened. https://t.co/JRVIdc6vQz
