The World Health Organization (WHO) said today it needed urgent access to Gaza to deliver aid and medical supplies, while the United Nations agency warned of a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Richard Brennan, regional director for emergencies at the WHO’s eastern Mediterranean office, said the WHO was meeting today with officials responsible for “decision-making” to allow access to Gaza as soon as possible.

Dr. Richard Peppercorn, the WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, said 2,800 people have been killed and 11,000 injured in Gaza since Israeli airstrikes began. About half of the victims are women and children.

There have been 115 attacks on health infrastructure and the majority of hospitals in Gaza are out of service, while medical supplies, water and electricity are in short supply, officials said.

The agency said there is a risk of disease outbreaks as concerns grow about the estimated 350,000 people in Gaza with chronic conditions such as diabetes who struggle to access medical care.
