Floods in Haiti – Four dead, one missing

by

At least four people have been killed and another is missing in Haiti after heavy rains caused flooding in much of the country, the Civil Protection announced on Tuesday.

Jerry Chandler, director of Civil Protection, told AFP yesterday morning that three deaths had been confirmed in the northwestern part of the country, where another man is missing.

The fourth death was recorded in the northeastern part of the country, Mr. Chandler added last night.

At least 20 communities were affected by the floods. According to the still temporary report of the authorities, more than 2,500 houses were flooded and three were completely destroyed.

Cap Aitien, the country’s second largest city (300,000 inhabitants), is particularly hard hit by the floods, with several neighborhoods under water.
“Conditions (…) have not yet allowed the damage to be accounted for” in the city, clarified the Civil Protection.
A bridge connecting a small northeastern town with the rest of the country has been damaged and an industrial park in the border area with the Dominican Republic has been flooded.

The acute lack of infrastructure for rainwater runoff has resulted in very frequent major material damage to Haiti’s main cities.

The lack of an efficient waste collection system also makes even poorer families even more vulnerable, setting up, often without permission, unsafe housing near sewers or garbage dumps.
