The Chinese citizen who drove his car into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco on October 9 was armed with a knife and a bow, San Francisco police said Thursday.

San Francisco police posted images of the attack which show the driver of the vehicle holding a knife after breaking into the visa processing area of the Chinese consulate.

Images captured by police body cameras show a colleague entering the consulate after 31-year-old Zhangyuan Yang was attacked.

In the video, officer Troy Carrasco can be seen yelling at Young to get on the ground, but he doesn’t comply and tries to hit the officer with a knife.

Carrasco retreats and fires at Young, before being heard yelling at consulate security: “You should have told me he’s got a knife!”.

Police said members of consulate security used pepper spray on the intruder to restrain him until police intervened.

The attacker was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

At the moment, the police do not know the motive of the attacker. However, he pointed out that at the scene of the incident he found “a knife with a 3.5 cm blade, two boxes of cartridges and a bow with arrows”.

The US has announced it will work with China to investigate the incident and condemned attacks on foreign diplomatic missions.
Many people of Chinese descent, some of whom are originally from Taiwan, live in San Francisco.
