US President Joe Biden’s request for the funding comes days after he visited Israel, pledging to support the Jewish state in its war against Hamas
THE White House asked today from the Congress to approve one package of nearly $106 billion for the financing ambitious plans for her Ukrainethe Israel and US border security.
US President Joe Biden’s request for the funding comes days after he visited Israel, pledging to support the Jewish state in its war against Hamas.
By bundling Israel’s funding with Ukraine’s, as well as border security, refugee aid, measures to counter China and other priorities, Biden hopes he has put together a national security spending bill that must pass and to win support in a chaotic House of Representatives, which has remained without a speaker for more than two weeks.
Of the proposed package, nearly $14.3 billion of the fiscal year 2024 funding would go to Israel, much of it to support the country’s air and missile defense systems and other weapons purchases.
Biden also wants more than $9 billion in humanitarian aid, including to Israel and the Gaza Strip, where the population faces a worsening humanitarian crisis.
The proposal also includes $13.6 billion for U.S. border security to address large numbers of migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean at the southern border, the fentanyl trade, and $4 billion in military aid and government funding to address of China’s regional policies in Asia.
But the largest share of funding, $61.4 billion, is intended for Ukraine. The request includes billions to replenish the country’s military equipment, provide financial aid and provide security and support to refugees who have taken refuge in the US.
