the die-hard, Republican congressman Jim Jordan failed in the third vote to be elected speaker of the House of Representativesas a result of which this House cannot respond to the request of American President Joe Biden for assistance to Ukraine and Israel.

To her the third vote, Republican lawmakers opposing Jordan’s nomination rose to 25, up from 22 who voted against him on Wednesday and 20 on Tuesday. Jordan garnered only 194 votes, well short of the 214 he needed.

Because the House has been without a speaker for three weeks, it cannot pass the $106 billion package requested by Biden for border security and aid to Ukraine and Israel.

It is currently unclear whether Jordan will abandon the effort, opening the way for other candidates. Earlier, at a news conference before the vote, he said the Republican plan is to get the House president-elect “as soon as possible.” Yesterday, some of his colleagues called for him to stand down and some said they would not vote for him if he persisted.

“It is clear that Jordan does not have and will not have the votes to be elected president,” Rep. Tom Kean, R-New Jersey, said in a statement.

Republicans control the House with 221 seats to 212 for the Democrats, but today some lawmakers were absent.
