Hamas announced today that it is working with “mediators” to free the “civilian” hostages it kidnapped during its October 7 attack on Israeli soil and are currently being held in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement issued after the release of two American women, a mother and daughter, the Palestinian Islamist organization said it was “working with all involved mediators to implement the movement’s decision to close the citizen (hostage) file when security conditions permit.” .

The two women are the first hostages to be released by Hamas.

From Washington, US President Joe Biden said he was “very happy” for the release of the two American women. “Our compatriots have experienced a terrible ordeal in the last 14 days and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their families,” he said, thanking Qatar and Israel for their cooperation. He also promised that the US would not stop its efforts “until the rest of the American hostages come home”.
