More than 1,000 migrants arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands on Saturday after making the perilous journey from Africa, including 320 on a boat.

The Red Cross announced that 320 migrants arrived on the island of El Hierro in a wooden boat, a record number of arrivals by one boat. The previous record was a ship carrying 271 people which reached the same island on October 3.

The Canary Islands have become the main destination for migrants trying to reach Spain. This year saw record arrivals of immigrants from Senegal and other African countries.

From January 1 to October 15, 23,537 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, an 80% increase compared to the same period last year, according to official figures.

Besides, in the same period of time at least 1,000 people have lost their lives trying to make the dangerous crossing, according to the organization Walking Borders.
