USA: The central part of the country was faced with snowstorms

by

A severe winter storm is hitting the central US today with heavy snowfall, sleet and gale-force winds, threatening to make travel almost impossible and possibly plunging millions of Americans into darkness.

Blizzard warnings are in effect across much of the United States, from Texas and Colorado to the Midwest and as far north as New York, by Friday morning, the Meteorological Agency (NWS) said.

The snow level is expected to reach 30 cm in a large part of the affected areas in the north, while the southern parts may be faced with a mixture of snow and sleet that will soon complicate traffic conditions today, according to NWS.

“Expect power outages and ice damage to trees. “Transportation may be impossible,” the meteorological service said in its Memphis weather report.

More than 100 million people are affected by extreme weather warnings, from the Rocky Mountains to New England, CNN reports.

About 2,400 flights have been canceled in the US to date, according to Flightaware.com. More than 400 flights were canceled to and from Chicago’s two largest airports alone.

The winter storm also forced dozens of school districts in the area to cancel classes at least for today.
