“It is important that Israel’s response takes place within international law, that civilian lives are protected and that humanitarian aid reaches Gaza,” the NATO secretary general said.
THE NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned attacks on Israel by Hamas today and said the Israeli response to Gaza must respect international law.
“We condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel,” Stoltenberg said in a speech to Nordic parliamentarians in Oslo.
“At the same time it is important that Israel’s response takes place within international law, that civilian lives are protected and that humanitarian aid reaches Gaza,” he added.
Stoltenberg said on October 11 that Israel has a right to self-defense but that he expected the response to Hamas attacks to be proportionate.
The NATO chief also warned of the risk of the war escalating into a wider conflict.
“Iran, Hezbollah and others must not take advantage of the situation. The pain in recent weeks reminds us that we must not stop working for a lasting, peaceful political solution to the conflict,” he said.
