Qatar reportedly mediated successfully to reach an agreement that would see the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt open within the day (Wednesday) and allow foreign nationals and dual nationals to leave the Strip.
According to the Reuters news agency, there is no agreement on the how long the crossing will remain open.
The report says Qatar brokered the deal between Egypt, Israel and the Hamas terrorist group, which controls Gaza, in coordination with the United States.
An unknown number seriously injured residents of Gaza is also expected to be transported through Rafah for medical treatment in Egypt.
Photos from the area appear to show foreign nationals waiting near the border.
However, there is no official announcement on the subject.
According to reliable reports from the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited by the BBC and Skynews, today the border crossing, the point that connects Gaza with Egypt, may be opened.
A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: “As the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have said, the safety of British nationals remains our top priority.
We are working closely with Egypt and Israel to ensure that all British nationals can exit via the Rafah crossing or other routes as soon as possible.
Intensive diplomacy is underway over the weekend – including with Israel and Egypt.”
Israel’s Western allies are pushing for the crossing to be opened to allow foreigners to leave Gaza as fighting intensifies across the region.
The BBC reports that the crossing will also be opened to transport seriously injured Palestinians to Egypt for treatment.
