The deal calls for two large camps with a total capacity of 36,000 people in the northwestern Albanian coastal towns of Lezia and Sengini to open next spring
It causes strong reactions in Albania the signing yesterday in Rome by the Prime Ministers Meloni and Rama, an agreement which provides for the construction in Albania of camps for African immigrants who arrive destined for Italy.
The agreement, as reported by the Albanian media, envisages two large camps with a total capacity of 36,000 people in the northwestern coastal Albanian cities of Lezia and Sengini to be operational next spring.
As the Italian Prime Minister stated, the camps will be under Italian jurisdiction and administration and there will be the registration and further management of immigrants.
The Albanian prime minister Edi Rama justified the signing of the agreement as the fulfillment of Albania’s debt to Italy which welcomed thousands of Albanian immigrants in the great exodus of Albanians after the fall of the communist regime in 1991.
The signing of the agreement was reported by the Italian media and provoked strong reactions in Albania, with the opposition demanding an immediate briefing of Parliament by Prime Minister Edi Rama. The agreement has been dominating the public debate since yesterday and the Albanian mass media recorded strong negative reactions and protests.
