The Federal Police of Brazil arrested two members of an organization believed to be sponsored by Hezbollah and plotting attacks in the country while seeking to recruit Brazilians, three sources with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters.
In its statement, the police said that two people – who were not named – were arrested in Sao Paulo on terrorism charges. Surveys were also conducted in Brasilia and the State of Minas Gerais. Hezbollah is not named in the announcement.
The Shiite Lebanese organization was not immediately available for comment.
Justice Minister Flavio Dino said at an event he attended in Rio de Janeiro that police were investigating a “terrorist network that was trying to establish itself in Brazil.”
Last month, leaders of Brazil’s Jewish community told Reuters they were seeing an increase in anti-Semitic comments online. “We are following today’s federal police operation with concern. Brazil has no history of terrorism and we hope that the conflict in the Middle East will not be introduced here,” said Ricardo Berkinstadt, the executive president of the Jewish Federation of the State of São Paulo (FiSESP).
Hezbollah has been designated a terrorist organization by Argentina, Britain, Canada, Germany, Honduras, the US and most of Washington’s Gulf allies. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said in 2019 that he planned to designate it a terrorist organization, but that never happened.
