Mexico’s first openly non-binary member of the judiciary and activist for the LGBTI+ community, Jesús Ociel Baena, has been found dead in his home, the BBC reports.
The judge’s body was found on Monday in downtown Aguascalientes, along with one more person. According to the local media, this is a friend of the judge.
Security Minister Rosa Icela Rodriguez said it was unclear “whether it was a homicide or some kind of accident.” According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office, there was no sign that a third person had entered the home.
Also, according to the BBC, a sharp object was found. Preliminary findings suggest the incident could have been personal.
The group for the rights of the LGBTI+ community urged local authorities to investigate the deaths thoroughly and without prejudice.
Alejandro Brito, the group’s director, said Baena had received “many hateful messages, even threats of violence and death,” the Associated Press reported.
The 38-year-old became a judge in the electoral court of the state of Aguascalientes in October 2022 and was thought to be the first non-binary person in Latin America to hold a judicial position. In June, she received a gender neutral passport.
“I’m a non binary person, I don’t care to see myself as female or male,” Baena wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that same month.
“This is my identity, it’s mine, it doesn’t belong to anyone else.”
The former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Mexico, Arturo Zaldivar, wrote on social media that he was deeply saddened by the death of the judge.
“We have lost a strong voice for the equality and rights of LGBTI+ people”, he said.
