The US Congress on Wednesday approved an extension of the federal budget in a rare show of party unity, thus preventing, three days before the deadline, the paralysis of much of the public sector, a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday.

After the House of Representatives the day before Tuesday, the Senate approved yesterday Wednesday with an overwhelming majority (87 votes in favor, 11 against) the agreement that extends until the middle of January the budget which would expire on the night of Friday to Saturday.

This was the third time in 2023 that members of Congress clashed over the budget, with Washington on the verge of declaring a default – the US debt exceeds 31 trillion. dollars – in the spring. Four million federal government workers were facing unemployment.

But in the end, members of Congress decided to avert the risk of a shutdown part of the federal state and give themselves two months leeway. The next deadline is January 19th, immediately after the start of internal party votes ahead of the November 5th 2024 election.
