Iceland is preparing for a massive volcanic eruption that could wipe out an entire city, release toxic fumes and cause widespread disruption.

The country announced an evacuation and declared a state of emergency as seismic activity is increasing around Fagradalsfjall volcano, which is expected to explode in the coming days.

The daily mail brings to light an audio clip thanks to an app that converts seismic frequencies into sound with the help of ‘Earthtunes’, which was developed by Northwestern University.

One is heard in the audio clip terrifying hum at a time when the region is hit by hundreds of earthquakes.

“The activity is scary,” he stated seismologist Suzan van der Lee, which co-developed the Earthtunes app.

“Iceland luckily evacuated soon”he added, explaining that 24 hours of seismic activity had been compressed into about a minute and a half of sound, recording the “unprecedented intensity of the earthquakes”.

“Icelandic seismologists monitor earthquakes, their increasing intensity but also their changing patterns”.

It is recalled that approximately 4,000 people were forced to leave their homes in the city of Grindavik due to its proximity to the Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula, while the popular Blue Lagoon tourist attraction has also been closed.
