A bottle of 1926 Macallan whiskey has sold at a Sotheby’s auction in London for an astronomical sum of £2.1 million, breaking the record set in 2019 for the most expensive spirit ever sold at auction by 1, 5 million British pounds.

Sotheby’s head of spirits Jonny Fowle told AFP he had the chance to taste a drop of the famous whiskey shortly before the auction began.

“I tried a small drop,” he told the French agency. “It’s very rich, has a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, a lot of spice, a lot of wood.”

He added that the whiskey spent 60 years maturing in dark oak sherry casks, which is reflected in the color. “It is not a whiskey to be taken lightly. It’s a rich, rich dram, but it’s incredible.”

The 1926 Adami is the oldest Macallan ever produced with just 40 bottles having been bottled in 1986. However, they were not marketed but instead offered to Macallan’s top customers.
