Moscow is awaiting the outcome of an investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines before making a request for compensation, Russian state news agency RIA reported, citing a Russian Foreign Ministry official as saying today.

Gas pipelines in the Baltic were damaged by explosions last year, and ongoing investigations have yet to conclude who is responsible.

According to RIA, the head of its economic cooperation department Russian Foreign Ministry Dmitry BirysevskHe responded to a question on the issue of compensation: “The investigation is not yet complete, we are waiting for its results to be presented to the (UN) Security Council, then we will decide what to do.”

Russia rebuffs on the USA, Britain and Ukraine the responsibility for the pipeline explosions, which largely cut it off from the lucrative European market. These countries deny any involvement.

The UN Security Council refused to conduct its own investigation into the incident, leaving it to the governments of Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
