At least 11 people were killed and 35 injured today in a fire that partially destroyed a shopping mall in Karachi, officials in Pakistan’s financial capital said.

“Our rescuers recovered 11 bodies” from the wreckage, he said AFP Shahid Hussainrepresentative of the Chippa organization, which is responsible for the rescue services.

He added that 35 people have been injured, seven of them seriously. “At least 40 people were rescued,” he said.

The fire broke out on the fourth of the six floors of the city’s shopping center.

Hussain said the fire was caused by a short circuit in a generator and quickly spread to two floors of the mall.
