“Instead of being the revolutionary tool that, in the beginning, allowed more people to access information, X has turned into a weapon of mass destruction of our democracies,” said Al Hidalgo.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo (Anne Hidalgo) has announced that it is deleting its account on Elon Musk’s platform X (formerly Twitter) because it has turned into a “huge global sewer” and a “tool to destabilize democracy”.
“I have made the decision to leave X. Instead of being the revolutionary tool that, in the beginning, allowed more access to information, X has turned in recent years into a weapon of mass destruction of our democracies,” writes Al Hidalgo in an article of Le Monde newspaper, which opened a Twitter account in 2009.
The account of the City of Paris remains at X, the municipal authority clarifies.
“Falsification, misinformation, feeding the impulses of hatredorganized harassment, obvious anti-Semitism and racism, herd attacks against scientists, climatologists, women, ecologists, progressives and all those of good will who wish for a calm and sober political debate in an increasingly complex world: the list of deviations is endless”, declares the socialist mayor of the French capital also denouncing the algorithm for which “the only thing that counts is the number of ‘likes'”.
Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, several figures announced their departure, but no mass departures occurred.
Many politicians have announced that they have opened accounts on competing platforms, such as European Commissioner Thierry Breton on Bluesky, but have not abandoned Musk’s platform.
Some organizations, on the other hand, have left the medium, such as the American public radio network NPR or recently the German Anti-Discrimination Agency, as well as climate researchers and experts, whose activity on Musk’s platform has been greatly reduced, according to a study published in August.
“This platform and its owner are deliberately blocking the information necessary for the drastic ecological and energy transition we need in favor of climate-skeptic reasoning promoted by fossil fuel interests,” writes Anne Hidalgo, who concludes by addressing the political world: “Thas this medium evolved into a huge global sewer and we have to keep falling into it?».
