The accident was caused by the rupture of a water pipe about 500 meters underground
Four people lost their lives and another was injured in an accident at the Sobieski coal mine in the southern Polish town of Jaworzno, local media reported today, citing the National Bureau of Mines (WUG).
Polish news agency PAP, citing Piotr Strzoda, spokesman for the National Bureau of Mines, reported that the accident was caused by a broken water pipe about 500 meters underground as workers flushed the pipeline. As he stated, the incident occurred at 15:30 local time (16:30 Greek time).
“While the pump was filling with water, it exploded uncontrollably, killing three people on the spot,” he said.
WUG received information that a fourth person had died at 6:10 p.m. local time, Strzonda said.
A sixth person who was at the scene of the crash “got out of there safe and sound,” he added.
The Sobieski mine belongs to the energy company Tauron.
Eleven people have died in Poland this year in mining accidents, according to the WUG.
Last year, 36 people were killed in accidents in the country’s mines, where this sector remains very important for energy production.
