At least three dead and nine wounded are the so far accounts of the bomb attack that took place today at the University of Mindanao, in the city of Marawi, Philippines.
A powerful explosion rocked the gymnasium around 07:30 (local time, 01:30 Greek time) where Catholic students and teachers had gathered for Sunday service, GMA network and radio station DZBB reported.
Lana del Sur provincial governor Mamindal Antiong Jr. condemned the “bomb attack” at the University of Mindanao “during Sunday Mass.” Addressing “the families of those who lost their lives in this senseless act of violence and terrorism”, the governor offered his sincere condolences and vowed to see to it that justice is served.
A message posted on the university’s Facebook page expressed “deep sadness and disgust at the act of violence that occurred during a religious gathering” and announced that classes would be suspended until further notice.
Police Director Alan Nobleza told reporters that the suspects are jihadists who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and in 2017 besieged Marawi City for five months.
Last Saturday, the Philippine military announced that it had killed 11 jihadists – including members of the Islamic State-affiliated Daulah Islamiya group – in an operation it conducted the previous day in the province of Maguindanao del Sur.
