A five-point plan has been unveiled by the British government to reduce legal immigration to the UK.
The plan comes in response to pressure from the more conservative wing of the ruling party after figures showed record net immigration arrivals in the country in 2022, namely 745,000.
It also follows the High Court’s rejection of the government’s plan to immediately deport to Rwanda migrants and refugees who arrive illegally on British soil to apply for asylum in the African country.
The five measures are: foreign social care workers will not be eligible to bring dependent family members, ie spouses and children, to Britain – skilled workers eligible to come to Britain for work will have to have a gross annual salary of at least £38,700 instead of the current £26,000 – changes to the list of occupations with labor shortages and removing the ability of employers in these sectors to offer wages reduced by 20% – raising the gross annual salary threshold for family visas also to £38,700 pounds – considering changes to the right of foreign graduates of British universities to stay in the country to work.
According to Home Secretary James Cleverley who presented the measures in the House of Commons, if the changes were in place last year 300,000 migrants would have been banned from entering the country.
